Mermay 2017 is a sketch series inspired by animator Tom Bancroft's drawing challenge in which you must a draw mermaid for every day of the month of May. I pushed myself to look further than the traditional depiction of the mermaid and ended up learning quite a bit from the multitude of fish I researched. As a result of this, I began to look at the boundaries between mermaids and fish people to try and keep an appropriate balance between fish and human traits while aiming for an eerie semi-realism. Regardless of whether or not I made fish people instead of mermaids, I had plenty of fun with this new angle and I vastly improved my skills with the ballpoint pen in the process.
Select prints were displayed at Rohs Street Cafe from Oct. 1, 2017 to Dec. 1, 2017.
Two pieces from the collection will be on display at Tanners Coffee Company in Playa del Rey, CA until further notice.
